In defense of them from where andead is coming from, Immortal encompass NONconformancy at its best.

From Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism to their latest, they've been consistent in brutality. They've stayed true to their roots and also retained the Black Metal "look" while other more popular "true bands" in the Black Metal "mainstream" have abandoned corpse paint, spikes, and elaborate weaponry. The best thing about this is that Immortal have gained their popularity through hard work and perseverance and the only sacrifice that was made to their sound was when Demonaez had to bow out. Abbath took the reigns of Immortal and spiraled the group into legendary status. These guys deserve any amount of fortune and fame gained because they remained consistent and evolved just enough to show maturity without sacrificing any heaviness whatsoever. Long live the kings of Black Metal, IMMORTAL!!

I don't think I would define Mercyful Fate as a "black metal" band.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of MF, and they did do a lot to establish the image of black metal, but musically I don't think so. While some may argue that the genre is all based in image and attitude, as far as I'm concerned, you can't be part of a genre, or sub-genre if there isn't some musical aspect that defines you as such.

I would define Mercyful Fate as a power metal band. They may be a darker form of power metal than what is popular today, but that was the standard for bands back in those days. In fact, the happy sounding, uplifting power metal didn't come about till Helloween introduced it. I do think that that darker edge is one thing that has been lost in modern power metal, and I would like to see more darker power metal bands.
